The piloting phase of the Green Guardens project took place in May and June 2024 in Romania in 12 educational institutions from Iasi and 2 kindergartens from other cities of the country with a total of 23 teachers involved in implementing the activities with the preschoolers. The initiative aimed to integrate environmental sustainability and green entrepreneurship into early childhood education through carefully designed Pedagogical Sequences and the Virtual Learning Lab (VLL). This project, targeting preschoolers, provided valuable materials to introduce key environmental concepts at a young age, fostering a foundation for sustainable behaviors.
Memorable Educational Impact
One of the most significant moments during the project occurred when the children engaged with “Mr. Smoke,” a character symbolizing pollution, during a hands-on activity. His role was to help the children understand the concept of environmental air pollution through interactive play. Their reactions and excitement were authentic, proving a deep involvement as they worked together to “shrink” Mr. Smoke. Notably, one little girl realized that her actions had empowered Mr. Smoke instead of shrinking him. It was hard enough for her to take a little piece of smoke and place it on top of planet Earth. It showed that children understood the importance our choices made every day have on the environment.
Motivation for Participation
Most of the teachers involved in the piloting phase were driven by its innovative focus on early childhood education for environmental sustainability. Traditionally, such subjects are introduced at later educational stages; however, this project highlighted the importance of instilling environmental values and habits at an early age. By targeting preschoolers, the project aligned with the teachers pedagogical goals of creating a more inclusive and sustainable learning environment.
Value and Outcomes of Participation
The pedagogical sequences were tailored to engage preschool children in a meaningful and age-appropriate manner. The use of gamification, storytelling, and role-playing helped simplify complex environmental topics, making them accessible and enjoyable for young learners. This structure significantly enhanced their engagement and understanding of sustainability.
The project did not only influence the classroom environment but also extended its impact to the broader kindergarten community. Children actively shared their newfound knowledge with their families, promoting environmentally conscious behaviors at home, such as recycling and water conservation. This wider effect demonstrated the potential for early childhood education to instigate real change within communities.
Classroom Changes and Future Goals
Since the implementation of the VLL and of the pedagogical sequences, there have been noticeable changes in classroom dynamics. Children have become more mindful of their environmental footprint—actively recycling, conserving water, and maintaining green spaces. These actions reflect the project’s success in instilling sustainable behaviors at a critical stage of development.
The GreenGuardens project has demonstrated the significant impact that early environmental education can have on young learners. The combination of interactive pedagogical sequences and practical learning experiences has equipped children with the knowledge and skills to become environmentally responsible citizens. The success of this initiative highlights the importance of incorporating sustainability education into early childhood curricula and underscores the value of projects like GreenGuardens in fostering a greener future.
